I'm the antithesis of a sports fan, so I'll be doing my best to avoid it. I wish the competitors luck, but I have no interest in watching any of it.

The good thing about the Olympics is that you get to see sports you don't go out of your way to "follow" before or after but which can be very entertaining/interesting at the time.

I just wish they'd cut down on the swimming competions...bizarre to me there are so medals for swimming so many different distances in so many different ways or a combination of ways and individually and in teams (are they going to have the mixed team relays as well?). IIRC they account for 10% of all the medals. I know "track AND field" athletics gets the lions share (C15%) but 100 metres free/butterfly/back/breast are essentially the same thing...javelin and 200 metres are not.

There's no running backwards or 3 legged races or running in clown shoes on the track, no tandem/tricycle/unicycle races in cycling (except para sports) and no-one gets to row a coxless 4 facing forwards on a pedalo.

I suspect this will be my least watched Olympics for a long time ........ partly because of the Covid atmosphere & lack of crowds. Inevitably competitors will be pulling out or having to self isolate during the games.

Also with most events being on overnight I'll miss most of it ...... recorded highlights are not the same

I just might try and catch my main sports ....... athletics finals (not the interminable heats), track & road cycling and the football

The Games get underway in a few hours time with Softball matches on Tuesday and Women's Football on Wednesday

I'm not really sure what Softball is ...... in my male chauvinist moments I reckon it's baseball for girls ....... with a tennis ball instead of a cricket ball

GB women football team are playing Wednesday against Chile with an 8.30 am kick off .... live on BBC2 and Eurosport

It sort of is...the bats are the same as in baseball and pitched around 75mph underarm compared to around 90mph overarm in professional baseball.
