I'm actually amazed that the skills needed to do the virtual sport have actually translated into the real world version!

The cycling world championships are on in Australia and GB won both the junior women's and junior men's time trials overnight .... the winners were both from south Wales which is fast becoming a hotbed of British cycling, maybe the consequence of Geraint Thomas winning the Tour de Franc e a few years ago caused a big upsurge in interest which is now working it's way through to elite level performers coming through

Zoe Backstedt won the junior women ..... it's her 4th world title at junior level in different aspects of the sport. In women's cycling there is no U23 level so Junior women go straight to Elite level once they pass out of junior ranks . If recording the same time Zoe woiuld have won the Elite women's time trial which was held a couple of days ago. Shes a star in the making !

Joshua Tarling won the Junior Men's time trial ....... he's signed up to Ineos Grenadiers, the premier British Pro team. He finished second in this world championship last year as a 17 year old and this year he won it

Zoe follows up with a Championship win in the Junior Women's Road Race ....... on her 18th birthday !

She left the pack after 15 minutes and rode off on her own and they never saw her her again as she won with over two minutes in hand

That's her 5th world championship in the junior ranks in road racing, cyclo-cross and on the track

But that's it for Junior racing ....... she's in with the big girls next year so life will become harder but I reckon a lot of the top women riders will be a bit woried ......... watch out, here comes Zoe

There are proposals to introduce a Women's Under 23 category in Championship events and to have a calendar of U23 road races ........ at the moment the girls go straight from Junior to Elite company.

Amazing win by my favourite woman cyclist in the Elite Women's road race

Annamiek van Vleuten came into the race having broken her elbow a few days ago in the time trial. They strapped her up and gave her the all clear to ride as a domestique for the very strong Dutch team. But all the other Durtch girls dropped away before the finish and Annamiek stormed through in the final kilometre for a tremendous win

You probably won't remember but she's the girl who was leading the road race at the Rio Olympics a few years ago but crashed on a downhill section, going very fast, and appeared to crack her head on the kerb ...... she lay still for ages looking like she might be dead

She's had an amazing year ..... she's won the women's equivalents of all 3 grand tours, Italy, France and Spain and now the World Championship

Remco Evenepoel won the elite Men's road race overnight ......... the young superstar of cycling has won a Grand Tour (Spain), one of the 5 Monument one day races and the World Championship this year to put him on top of the heap

He's only 22 and the sky looks the limit

We've been followig him on the DS thread since 2018 ..... when he won the Junior world championship both road race and time trial (as Zoe Backstedt did this year). He skipped the Under 23 category and went Elite Pro straight from Juniors

With Evenepoel, Pogacar and hopefully Pidcock along with several others there's an exciting bunch of early 20s riders taking over the sport

By the way thanks to the Juniors GB topped the medals table at the World Championships for the first time in over a decade

^^ I should make an effort to watch more of the cycling! I do enjoy the Tour de France, but just three weeks a year means I don't really get to be an expert!
