I thought about this being just for my indoor spuds (potatoes. Not a euphemism) but figured that would be a drying-of-paint level of excitement...

So on the off chance that anyone cares but mostly for self indulgence

The candidates were these :

Without the ruler, those probably wouldn't look too bad!

BTW, the photo above looks like a flashback in a drama, as those are always in black and white...

Monochroming was a q&d way to reduce the file size as although this thing will let me crop images, it won't let me shrink them.

I was tempted to do it as two separate images with the ruler separate, precisely because without the scale it's really hard to tell :)

But it's not all mirth and humour, two of them shrunk to almost nothing before I even started :(

Just for fun, a progress report!
Surprisingly doing rather well even while they were still in the little plastic tray.

Now moved to deluxe accommodation with shredded paper and chopped up remnants of apple and lettuce. I think I overwatered so I'll stick them in some deeper shredded paper with maybe a feeding pit to drop the nutritional bits in to.

The tallest are about a foot high  though the shortest seems to have expired and another seems a bit twiggier than it should be :(
I know it's hard to tell but there's actual green on them.

A foot tall in just over a week!

If you suddenly disappear, we'll know you've been triffidised...

Actually a teensy bit more than a week, there may have been some time elapsed between sticking them on wet kitchen paper and deciding to post about it, my apologies for frightening the natives!

Add another few weeks to the timescale

That said, one week was them doing nothing what with being left forgotten untouched and drying out and then a while returning to life so total alive and growing time, maybe two or three weeks, almost all the growth in the last two.

I know I know, I should have kept a proper diary...

^^ Better than any spuds, or indeed plants of any kind, that I have ever grown! :D

Just to close this one off, an eventuality I had suspected might arise but was I denial, after reaching the heady heights of 26" before being unable su support itself, the tallest and longest surviving of the plants eventually succumbed to the ills of ink and paper additives as the watering and some decent kitchen offcuts to feast on should have been more than adequate.

On top of those (which I suspect might have inhibited leaf formation) the roots seemed a bit minimal, probably because shredded paper is actually rubbish (b'dum-tsh) for growing thing in because it settles into layers in spite of initial mixing in with chopped veg scraps and the roots can't get through or function well in those.

A bit of a shame but not totally unexpected. On the other hand, I sliced open an apple the other day and a couple of the seeds in the core were sprouting...
